A media like BBC should be more
responsible to publish such alternative news (
Poor-selling-organs-to-pay-debt-BBC ) of a development project or
program like Micro Finance which has given address of capital to the poor,
ultra-poor and landless. BBC has given a negative case study from the
unsuccessful members who are less than 10%, but 90% beneficiaries doing very
well. We can see it clearly that maximum poor people have some capital now, but
go back twenty years ago, we have seen reverse picture that poor & landless
had to depend on physical labor totally, they had no way at all to manage some
money to think anything alternative. But it has been changed all, just make
plan, you need not think about money to start any project, you can easily get
the loan of Micro Finance. Some members take loan without any plan or to repay
other loan and some members can't be succeed at their project, so they fall in
problem to pay installment. It is true that there is cruelty with this program,
but it usually happens for some rubbish management. I have worked in Micro
Finance Program for seven years form bottom to top level and no MFP
organization supports such kind of cruelty to do with members, but some stupid
management does such behave to get some advantage from program showing
excellent performance. At this report BBC has shown the higher interest rate of
this program, but they should also analyze the administration and operating
cost of this program. Only a single banker can easily handle over hundred
millions BDT loan outstanding in banking sector, but a branch of Micro Finance
with seven staffs can handle ten millions BDT outstanding on average. Now think
about the difference of cost between Banking and Micro Credit sector. NGOs are
taking interest maximum 30% but it effects on the particular member highest
15%, and it is easy to repay small installments for such a man who depends on
daily income, if you say them, return the money at a time after a fixed period,
most of them will be failed to repay the loan. Otherwise this program is
creating thousands job opportunities directly and indirectly. I think BBC
should published this report highlighting positive side of this program suggesting
to avoid cruelty so that a negative impact couldn’t be fall on such a great
development program which has changed the luck of thousands poor and landless.
I would like to ask to them who are appreciated with this reporter, “Do you
have anything alternative of Micro Finance Program to give financial support
poor and landless for their project without any mortgage?”
